Geography

Cut through by the Maè river, the Zoldo Valley acts as the Northern border of the Dolomiti Bellunesi National Park and links two of the most spectacular and aspired mountains in the Dolomites; the Civetta and the Pelmo.
Zoldo is also surrounded by the peaks of the Moiazza, the S. Sebastiano, the Spiz di Mezzodì, the Pramper and the Bosconero group.
Walking, trekking, mountain biking, nature holidays, snow-shoeing, alpine climbing and "viaz" can bring the visitor to experience some of the wildest corners of the valley.

Other villages

FORNO DI ZOLDO

Forno di Zoldo takes his name from the village of Forno, where the local council il sited. Forno di Zoldo is however, made up of numerous other little villages.
Fornesighe, where are the B&B abd the apartments Dormì&Disnà Astragal, Dozza, Pieve, Bragarezza, Campo, Casal, Villa are only a few of these, and each has its image, features, and personality. They are largely located on the high plain of the Valley, in a strategic position, geographically speaking. The physiognomy of the valley as a whole may change from village to village, but each village provides views and sights that warm the soul and not only.
Pralongo e Dont are two other striking villages in the Valley. Pralongo has a lovely walk along the Val Pramper, the latter also acting as the northern access to the National Park of the Dolomities of the Province of Belluno . Pralongo also has a rather well looked after old traditional blast furnace (fusinela), that provides evidence of the iron production once undertaken in the valley. Dont, on the other hand, is based in a strategic point, at crossroads to Agordo.
Forno di Zoldo's history probably started at the beginning of the second millennium but available documentation testing the presence of six ovens in Forno is dated as late as 1365. This is only one of the pieces of evidences that testifies the importance, socially and economically, of the iron activities for the Valley, in particular for Forno di Zoldo, up until the 19th century.
Forno di Zoldo, where the local council is located, (848m), takes his name from the ovens that were once present. In these ovens, metals were melted, largely iron. Also, blast furnaces were plentiful (fusinele places where iron was worked), these largely located close to the Prampera and Maè river. Forno offers tourist services and other basic needs, such as supermarkets, chemists, hairdressers, and easy access to the Cadore Valley and Belluno.

ZOLDO ALTO

In the same way that Forno di Zoldo is built up of many villages, Zoldo Alto is also so formed. There isn't such a thing as the village of Zoldo Alto.
Fusine (1800m) is where the local council is based, while Pianaz, Mareson and other like villages form the meat on the bone of the area. Pecol (1380m) is the most important centre and the last village one reaches, if coming from Forno di Zoldo. It has always hosted pioneer mountain travellers and still today, offers easy access to its mountains via spectacular alpine routes, walks and ski slopes. As the heart of the area's tourism concentration, it is a great base for winter and summer holidays.
Coi, together with Costa e Brusadaz, remain the real windows to the area's old traditions. Coi, located at 1495m s.l.m., is a village immersed in sunlight, at the foot of Mount Pelmo. It offers wonderful views on the Civetta mountain and the Dolomities of Zoldo generally. In these three villages, there are numerous examples of tabià (old style haylofts), that thankfully remained intact or have been turned into houses, that maintain the original structures, reminding one of the mountains of the area, lived on, cultivated and respected throughout.
