Mount Rite: on foot, mountain bike or snowshoes…

One would not define Mount Rite (2183m) as a beautiful mountain. From its peak, however, it provides a stunning 360° view of the dolomites, including Mount Antelao, the Tofana di Rozes, the Pelmo, the Civetta, and the Bosconero.

It was because of its strategic position, set between the Cadore area and the Valley of Zoldo, that Mount Rite was chosen as a area of military defence, complete with army barracks, observatory and gunner points, these blending aptly into the mountainous landscape. However, from there, few gunshots were fired as the front line was shifted shortly after the set up. Nevertheless, the place remains a valuable source of information and evidence on First World War military defence strategy.

Today, the structure is open for viewing to all, as the premises of Reinhold Messner’s Museum in the Clouds, open during the whole summer season.
