VAJONT DAM

9 October 1963

A tragedy sadly made Longarone famous.

There was a partial collapse of Monte Toc, and the debris fell into the reservoir and the water held in the dam overflowed and a 250 high meter wave destroyed the village and caused many causalities in the Piave valley. It was described as “the tallest dam” during the 1960s, and it is still considered as one of the highest dams in 2018, and still remains intact today. Though the village was demolished, life there continued and people still live there today. However, it is important to remember the tragedy and to not forget those disastrous events. There is an interesting museum that recounts the story with more precision and details, giving one a more enlightened insight into the events of 1963, and it is also possible to visit the dam.
